BattleTech: Hot Spots: Draconis Reach

I bought this for the updates to the Chaos Campaign system, which I then backported into the Hinterlands setting. Book still has a bunch of weird typos that should have been caught by just running spellcheck in Word, but it's not anywhere near as bad as Hot Spots Hinterland's nonexistent editing was.

The setting itself is decent enough and I can see myself running a Reach campaign later after finishing Hinterlands. Notably there's a number of named mercs in this book that have interesting backstories and I can see making good NPCs for a narrative game.

The one disappointment I have is the half-baked inclusion of the Snow Ravens as a player force option. Taking the rules as written there's only one game scenario in the book written so the Ravens can take it, and that's a disappointment. There was room here for some cold war spy shenanigans with the Ravens trying to undermine the Davions, continuing plot threads from Ilkhan's Eyes Only and Dominions Divided.

The Draconis Reach is filled with contracts promising C-bills, salvage, and glory. This volume gives mercenary commanders meaningful assignments, difficult choices, and battles whose consequences extend beyond the final turn.

Godfrey’s Dragoons may be mercenaries, but we are not without loyalty. We serve Holy Mother Church, defend His Holiness Pope Leo XXI, and stand between the people of Davion space and those who would conquer them. A contract determines where we deploy; faith and duty determine how we fight.

Five stars. Excellent campaign material—and a worthy battlefield for Godfrey’s Dragoons.

Great book so far still reading and evaluating

Excellent book. If will be very useful. It makes the previous book, hinterlands even better.
