Overview:
Built off an improved Hellbringer chassis, the Gryphon is Clan Stone Lion’s attempt at making a hard hitting and tough heavy OmniMech. Although it is on the lighter end of the Heavy OmniMech scale, the Gryphon has proved to be a durable design. Thick Ferro-Lamellor armor, 25.5 tons of pod space, and a supercharger as part of the base design makes for a deadly OmniMech within the Stone Lion touman.
The Star Adders originally supplied the specifications for the Ferro-Lamellor armor so that Clan Stone Lion could manufacture the design on their own. The rest of the components are updated versions taken directly from the old Hellbringer assembly line and updated with modern weaponry. With slightly less pod space than the OmniMech it replaces, it has almost double the armor of its parent design; lack of armor was often seen as the greatest weakness of the Hellbringer design. Ferro-Lamellor replaces the standard armor offering superior protection per ton in addition to the overall increase of tonnage devoted to it. A Supercharged 325 XL engine and 10 double Heat Sinks complete the base chassis.
Manufactured primarily on Niles by Clan Stone Lion, there have been reports of a secondary manufacturing site though its existence has not been confirmed. However, the numbers of the Gryphon fielded by the Stone Lions and the other invading Clans support these reports.
Capabilities:
The Gryphon, which stands for “Fighting Chief” or “Fierce” in old Terran Greek Mythology, has average speed for its weight but the addition of a supercharger can propel this OmniMech to speeds over 100 kph for short times). Hard hitting, agile, and tough to take down, the Gryphon has become a common sight within the touman of Clan Stone Lion. Five configurations offer considerable flexibility for changing environments and tactical situations, while the use of a familiar chassis and components helps to speed up repair times. The ability to carry Battle Armored troops into battle is of particular importance to the combined arms conscious Stone Lions.
The Prime is designed to be a direct fire support platform. Dual Class 20 Hyper Assault Gauss Rifles can shred an opponent at long range while a single ER Small Laser provides backup firepower. Five tons of HAG ammunition ensure that the Gryphon Prime can stay in the fight.
The A variant is an all-around fighter reminiscent of the Hellbringer Prime. Mounting an iATM-6, two ER Large Pulse Lasers, and a single ER Medium Laser for weaponry, the A variant prioritizes staying power over sheer damage. The ER Large Pulse Lasers provide accurate ranged fire while the iATM rack makes the most of its three tons of ammunition. An additional 6 Double Heat Sinks help keep the Gryphon A’s heat in check.
The B variant provides Fire Support in the form of quad iATM-9’s with 5 tons of ammunition. A solitary ER Small Laser is the only secondary weaponry.
The C configuration is built for close combat. It has a jumping range of 150 meters, and comes armed with an ER Small Laser, six Medium Pulse Lasers, and twin Improved Heavy Medium Lasers. Along with an Active Probe, this design is exceedingly difficult to escape in tight terrain.
The D variant uses a Class 30 Hyper Assault Gauss Rifle split between the Left Arm and Left Torso, along with an Improved Heavy Large Laser and ER Small Laser. All three weapons are tied into a Targeting Computer for enhanced accuracy.
Deployment:
As with most OmniMech designs seen on the battlefield, the Gryphon is most prominent within all the front-line galaxies of the Stone Lion touman. It is somewhat rarer within the toumans of the other invading Clans. The Stone Lions field large numbers of the Gryphon, which they view with great pride.
As one of the two new Heavy OmniMech designs in use with Clan Stone Lion it is not uncommon to see an entire star made up of just Gryphon OmniMechs. Most Gryphons are assigned to Battle & Assault Stars, but they are also examples within the Clan Keshik as well. All Clan Stone Lion front-line galaxies have large numbers of Gryphons at their disposal, while they serve as command units in their second line Galaxies. The Gryphon’s blend of speed, armor, and firepower are quickly making it a favorite among the Clans more aggressive warriors.
